Population Profile
Families who come to Room to Grow are living at or below the poverty level and come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Currently, 75% of the families we work with in New York and 68% in Boston are led by single mothers. Of the families we serve, 51% in New York and 37% in Boston are Hispanic; 28% in New York and 49% in Boston are Black/African-American; 14% in New York and 4% in Boston are Caribbean; 2% in New York and 8% in Boston are Caucasian; 5% in New York and 2% in Boston are Other. While most of the families we serve receive some level of government assistance, such as food stamps and WIC funds, approximately 50% in New York and 57% in Boston hold full or part-time jobs, yet still care for a child and live in poverty.
